I spent an evening recently visiting with dear friends. As we all sat on the rooftop patio, doing our best to soak up what seems to be the end of the summer sun, the topic of what was going on in Syria came up. There was lots of conversation about what was happening, and not happening. France had stepped up and we all agreed it was about time someone did. And then my friend said this:
What can we, as individuals, do?
This isn’t an unusual question when it comes to world affairs. There are lots of writings and sayings around just doing your part. How one person CAN make a difference. Vote! Speak up! etc.. For some reason, this particular conversation took me in a direction I haven’t gone before. No, I’m not writing this from the plane on my way to Syria. This is what came for me:
As Within, so it is Without
One of my guiding beliefs is we are deeply, inextricably connected to every single person, animal and thing on this planet. Another is that we are an evolving species.
As it always has been, and always will be, the world is evolving. And that comes with growing pains. In Syria that looks like a civil war; evolution at it’s most devastating. We don’t get to go from what was to what could be without going through some stuff.
It’s the same for each and every one of us individually. As we choose to look at ourselves and heal past hurts, raise our consciousness, live a more connected and heart centred life, we also choose to go through the fire. As anyone that has taken on personal development at any level will tell you, it’s uncomfortable at the very least and devastating at it’s worst. Often it means we have to move on from relationships we’ve been in for years. One thing it meant for me was giving up a well paying career I was really good at.
It can leave you in turmoil and angst for a time, questioning everything. It feels like there is no longer any solid ground. And we do it because we’re an evolving species.
The prize is to live a conscious, created life. And that turns into an awareness of the preciousness of all life, including the life of our planet and all the other human beings that live on it.
So if you have asked yourself What can I do? the answer is work from the inside out. Do what it takes to heal you. Raise your consciousness. Open your heart and start to listen to it. Everything you do inside affects everything that happens outside. As within, so it is without. If you want peace in the world, create peace in yourself. If you want to see more love in the world, fall deeper in love with yourself. If you want the people of Syria to be able to live with all the basic human rights we are so blessed to have in this country, live a life of gratitude for all that you have and can attain.
